Contouring is one of those beauty steps which I never seem to miss-out, as with the help of just a couple of key products your face can be instantly transformed into ‘model-esque’ definition. This trend is huge, with it frequently being seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian (the queen of contouring) and Beyonce, and the best part is that it can easily be created at home.
So with that in mind I thought I would share with you how I contour my own face, using two of favourite products from Mac at The House of Fraser–a go to destination for online make-up shopping. I am by no means an expert, I just thought I would share with you my approach to the trend.
What you will need:
Mac Matte Powder Blush in “Prism” (link)*-contour
Mac Mineralize Skin Finish in “Soft and Gentle” (link)*-highlight
Real Techniques Contour Brush (part of the core collection)
Real Techniques Stippling Brush
For me when it comes to choosing a product to use for the ‘contour’ I have found the most effective ones are matt as they create a ‘natural’ looking shadow without the need for shimmer. “Prism“ by Mac is perfect for my fair skin, as I found that it doesn’t appear orange or “muddy” when I apply it to my face, which a lot of bronzers can be.
So with my ‘contour brush’ I suck my cheeks in-hello ‘fish face’ and sweep the colour along the hollows of my cheekbones, blending from the ear downwards. For me the best way to do this is start with a light amount of colour and gradually build it up, to you desired about of ‘definition’.
I then sweep the colour along the sides of nose and take it down along my jawline, to define the rest of face. If I didn’t have a fringe I would additionally apply some colour along my temples, to add more of a ‘sun kissed’ glow. With the contouring done I always take the time to blend the product into my skin, using a stippling brush, to tone down any harsh edges and therefore make it appear more ‘natural’.
Now for the ‘highlight’, from my research the key to highlighting is to use a product which is either slightly lighter than your skin or a skinned tone shimmer. Highlighting is all about adding the product to the areas of the face where the light ‘naturally’ hits, this includes the bridge of your nose, tops of cheekbones, cupids bow, inner corners of your eyes, brow bone and centre of your face (between eyebrows). For me the product I love to use is Mac Mineralize Skin Finish in Soft and Gentle, which is a beautiful rose-gold toned shade, that works well as a natural highlight to your face due to its golden tone. I proceed to apply a small amount of this to the bridge of my nose, tops of my cheekbones and the inner corners of my eyes, to subtly highlight my face without looking like a full-blown disco ball.
So there you have it a simple guide to contouring your face using just two products!
