Going from brown to blonde in less than 12 months
If you’ve been a longtime follower than you’ll know that my hair is one thing I’m constantly changing. I have pretty much been every hair colour under the sun (except from red), including Blue, Green, Pink, Purple, Black, Brown and Blonde. I first fully embraced being blonde in 2017, but unbeknown to most my hair was in pretty dire condition. Purely because I was doing it myself! Something I wouldn’t recommend if you want to be blonde for more than a year. But am I always asked how I maintain my blonde hair.
Back in late 2017 I had to dye my hair back to brown in order to start the ‘healing’ process, from the bleach induced damage. Going back blonde from brown wasn’t something I thought I would initially do. But I really missed having blonde hair! So I decided that I wanted to make the plunge and start the long ol’ process of going back blonde, late last year. So let’s move onto to how I maintain my blonde hair and the process.
After booking an appointment in with my local salon (who were and have been amazing), we decided to start with applying numerous sets of highlights. The process officially began in November of last year (2018), and it took approximately 5 ’rounds’ of full head of highlights for my hair to finally look blonde. This is an instagram picture of the result for reference. We then decided to take the plunge and do a full head of bleach with a strong toner, to counteract the warmth. Being naturally dark this is always something I’m trying to cancel out. I now just get the roots topped up every 5-6 weeks, with an added toner and treatment. This process is not for the faint hearted, but if you’re as determined as I was. The results are worth it!
The Silver Shampoo
L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Shampoo
One of the things I always get asked is how I maintain my blonde hair. Especially from those aware of the full process of going from brown to blonde. Silver Shampoo has always been my secret weapon. From being blonde a couple of years back I have trialled a few in my hair journey. The L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Silver Shampoo is my all time favourite. I try to use this 2-3 times a week, depending on how warm my hair is. I leave it on for 10 minutes, rinse, and then follow with a hair mask. As purple shampoo’s goes this one hasn’t turned my hair lilac and the pigments ratio in this formula are perfect for a cool toned blonde.
Hair Mask & Hair Oil
If there is one thing I’ve learn’t not to ‘skip’ on being blonde, is moisture. Thanks to using an intensive repair treatment (similar to Olaplex) at every appointment, I have suffered from minimal breakage. In between appointments I love to use Bleach London ‘Reincarnation Mask’, this mask is by no word of a lie my holy grail. I’ve used other hair masks in the past that just ‘coat’ your hair. However, this one leaves it moisturised and shiny, with the help of the added plant proteins. I try to use a hair mask 1-2 weekly.
Hair Serums are my best friends in taming flyways and keeping my hair smooth and shiny. I tend to use one which is ‘colour-less’ as I’m paranoid that the yellow tinted serums will make my hair ‘yellow’. I have been enjoying using this ‘Andrew Barton‘ one, and love how lightweight it is. There are some other favourites of mine below.
