Post University Life
Post university life has become an adjustment. University for me seemed like a lifetime ago even though I only graduated in July. Graduation was a massive achievement for a range of different reasons, but most importantly signified the start of a new chapter. My degree was ok. I’m not going to sit here and say it was the best 3 years of my life, because it wasn’t. The first time I actually felt like I could fully focus on it was in my final year, as prior I was trying to get my health sorted. But aside from that, I still have mixed feelings about the whole experience.
The pressure
There is a lot of pressure on you to find that ‘perfect’ degree course that you are supposed to enjoy for its duration. But the reality of life is that things will change during that short amount time. You will obviously grow as a person and realise what you want out of life, might not marry up with your course expectations. I picked a subject I loved and still do. But have realised that it is not all I want to do in my career. I came to this realisation in third year and frankly speaking, my tutors didn’t get it. Even questioning why I was there? It was third year and if there was something I was going to achieve it was getting (and finishing) a degree. So I stuck it out.
What’s next?
Post degree life was pitched in some ways as this daunting world outside of university life. A world outside the blanket of education. For me, if I could condense my three years into two (or less) I would have. As I was eager to break free from this bubble during year 2. I was excited to start the working world and lucky to fall into a job soon after I left. When people sell uni as the best three years of your life. It’s hard not to have these exceedingly high expectations of how it will pan out. But what I have taken away is that you can prove a lot about yourself within that short amount of time. Whether that’s growing in confidence, personally or in your own career development. I am glad and proud that I’ve got a degree, and that is all that matters.
